Port Lockroy[]

Location (Real World): Wiencke Island, Palmer Archipelago, Antarctica

Established (Real World): Originally discovered in 1904; used by British explorers and researchers

Notable Use (SCP Task Force Universe): Chaos Insurgency stronghold in Operation Black Nightmare

Overview[]

Port Lockroy is a real Antarctic outpost situated on Goudier Island off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Historically, it has been utilized as a British research station—often referred to as “Base A.” Today, it functions primarily as a museum and post office for Antarctic tourists, while also hosting small-scale research projects on local wildlife (particularly penguins).

In the SCP Task Force universe, Port Lockroy is repurposed as a clandestine base of operations for the Chaos Insurgency, where part of the game’s second operation (“Operation Black Nightmare”) takes place. The game fictionalizes the site by introducing underground facilities, concealed mineshafts, and advanced weapon emplacements that differ significantly from its real-world counterpart.

Port Lockroy in Operation Black Nightmare[]

Narrative Role[]

In Operation Black Nightmare, Alpha-1 "Red Right Hand" infiltrates Port Lockroy to rescue a kidnapped Overseer (O5-4) from Chaos Insurgency hands. Satellite imagery reveals a hidden CI stronghold beneath the iconic Antarctic outpost, repurposing old tunnels or mineshafts. While the real-world Port Lockroy is far less militarized, the game’s storyline heightens the tension by adding:

  • CI-occupied bunkers and prison cells
  • Surface anti-aircraft (AA) systems
  • Infected zones where Chaos Insurgency has released or tested SCP-008 on-site

Gameplay Highlights[]

  • Parachute Entry: Due to the strong anti-air defenses around Port Lockroy, Alpha-1 "Red Right Hand" drops in via parachute, landing near an abandoned mineshaft that serves as a hidden entrance.
  • Stealth & Combat: Players traverse winding tunnels filled with armed Chaos Insurgence. They must also navigate quarantined areas where SCP-008 has infected personnel, forcing them to don respirators.
  • VIP Rescue: After locating O5-4 in solitary confinement, the squad must escort the Overseer back to the surface while fending off reinforcements.
  • Final Showdown: The operation ends atop the Antarctic plateau, where Alpha-1 "Red Right Hand" destroys multiple AA guns to allow an extraction helicopter to land.

Operation Black Nightmare: Summary[]

Trivia & Real-World Contrast[]

  • Historic Site vs. Military Base:
    • In reality, Port Lockroy is a small museum and penguin colony research station.
    • In Task Force, it is significantly expanded with underground infrastructure and chaos-driven hostilities.
  • Tourist Destination:
    • While real tourists collect postcards at Port Lockroy, Operatives in Operation Black Nightmare are more likely to collect bullet casings and classified documents.
